Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Eases How Fibromyalgia Pain is Experienced by the Brain

According to a recent study, patients with fibromyalgia who underwent cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) experienced significantly greater reduction in pain interfering with daily activities and pain catastrophizing, compared to patients who did not undergo CBT. Furthermore, patients who underwent CBT reported that their fibromyalgia had a significantly lower impact on their daily lives. Co-first author Jeungchan Lee, PhD, explained that CBT was associated with weaker connections between parts of the brain linking self-awareness and sensation, which allowed patients to separate themselves from their pain.
