A recent study demonstrated that 72 percent of adults aged 50 to 80 years who reduced sodium intake by about one teaspoon per day for one week experienced a decrease in systolic blood pressure. There was a 1- to 2-point greater reduction in blood pressure when switching from a high-sodium diet (2,200mg/day in addition to usual diet) to a low-sodium diet (500mg/day), compared to switching from a usual to low-sodium diet. Researchers noted that results were consistent among individuals regardless of baseline blood pressure.
